Sound (English), b&w, 12 min. Land reform in one of Italy’s poorest regions, Calabria, at the foot of the peninsula. How an Italian initiative, “Opera Sila,” using American aid funds, reclaims the land and sells it to peasant cooperatives. Those who work the land are offered farm machines by lot (to avoid political favoritism), equipment they can pay for through long-term, low-cost loans. They also receive seed for the first planting and livestock, as well as expert instruction. Dams for water control and irrigation, and construction of new roads to market are part of the scheme. 1950. Produced by Pino Giemini, Rome, for ECA Italy.
