Leslie R. Groves Collection
Leslie Richard Groves (1896-1970) was the military commander of the Manhattan Engineering District – the atomic bomb project. He oversaw the production and testing of the first atomic bomb, working closely with J. Robert Oppenheimer and other scientists at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Following publication of his book, Now It Can Be Told, in 1962, Groves put twenty-one of the documents pertaining to the Manhattan Project into a scrapbook. Included are the memo requesting Groves for special duty, the messages for President Truman at Potsdam, the memo for Secretary Stimson regarding the testing of the bomb and its effect, as well as documents concerning the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
