COLLEGE BEGINS Letter from Mom, September 21, 1942
I am happy you can be in school this year & especially in Bozeman, where I think they really study and get a lot out of each day. I miss you more than you know but realize fully I can't keep you with me always. I know you will reflect your home training now that you are away. More
NOW DON'T GRIPE ME Letter from Dad, September 30, 1942
Emmett, you don't seem to realize that you will fritter away a dollar here and a dollar there than will run into real money-- that can be used to make less work for you in getting through school--if you do get through, what with other draft, etc. I know--its [sic] the same old thing. And it will be as long as you persist in the course you now follow. I didn't tell you not to write those things because I was sure you knew how I felt and I was sure you would start to take a different view of things when you got to school--would realize there is more than this moment to your life--there's years ahead-- and discipline comes easier in the early years, I don't intend to "razz" you by mail, Emmett, but I do want you to quit doing the things you know worry me--at least quit writing about them to us here. Can't you see its [sic] all because I'm so darned proud of you, and want you to be all that I have dreamed of and ached to be for years? More
MONEY AGAIN Letter from Dad, October 11, 1942
Oh, yes, Emmett, if you read my letter again you will see that I was not provoked at the cokes, etc. but at the extra money spent for books and slide rule which could have been secured for about half to two-thirds of what you are paying. I know, and I want you to have some pleasures with the studying. You must keep up your end and that's OK with me. Besides your letter came just after a specially hard day of work at the office and I was tired and worried about mom and my folks, etc. Gosh, Emmett, I don't want you to think I expected you to be a miser or hermit, but I do so want you to get everything possible out of the hard work that earned your money for you. See? Don't tell us you ate weenies! More
